What Is PaRRVA? SEBI Performance Verification Explained

For years, a Research Analyst's past performance was whatever they said it was. PaRRVA changes that. It is a new, independent layer that checks the numbers before they reach a client or a prospect.

Note: PaRRVA is a live, evolving SEBI framework. Confirm current enrolment status and deadlines against the latest SEBI circular before acting.

PaRRVA stands for Past Risk and Return Verification Agency. SEBI created it to solve a specific problem: an Investment Adviser, Research Analyst or algo provider can claim whatever return figure they like in a pitch deck, a website, or a WhatsApp forward, and until now nothing independently checked it. PaRRVA is the check.

What PaRRVA actually does

A PaRRVA-recognised agency verifies the risk and return figures an IA, RA or algo provider wants to show clients or prospects, against the underlying trade and price data. The intent is to standardise how performance gets calculated and presented, so a "42% return" claim means the same thing everywhere and can be checked against a source of truth, not just the adviser's own spreadsheet.

Who runs it, and who feeds it data

Under a SEBI circular dated April 29, 2026, CARE Ratings Limited was recognised as the first PaRRVA. The National Stock Exchange was designated the PaRRVA Data Centre, the infrastructure layer that supplies the price and trade data the verification runs against. In practice this means an independent credit-rating agency, using exchange data, sits between an adviser's performance claim and the client who reads it.

The full enrolment mechanics and consequences of missing the deadline are covered separately in the PaRRVA enrolment guide for Research Analysts.

Why this matters beyond compliance

PaRRVA is a SEBI-driven change to how performance is verified, not a marketing tool and not a source of investment advice. But it changes the credibility of an RA's pitch. A verified track record is harder to dismiss than a screenshot, and once verification becomes the norm, an unverified performance claim starts to look like a red flag rather than a shortcut. See how a verified track record compares to a self-reported one.
