PaRRVA-Verified vs Self-Reported Track Record: What Changes for RAs

Every RA says their track record is good. PaRRVA is the first mechanism that lets a prospect check whether that is true without taking the RA's word for it.

Note: This is a description of a regulatory framework, not investment advice and not a claim about any specific adviser's performance. Confirm PaRRVA's current scope and process against SEBI's circulars.

Before PaRRVA, every Research Analyst's performance claim carried the same implicit asterisk: source, the RA themselves. A well-run practice with honest methodology and a practice that curated its best trades looked identical on paper, both were just numbers on a page or a screenshot in a pitch deck. See what PaRRVA is if you have not already, then read on for what actually changes.

Five ways the two claims differ

Who checks the numbers

Self-reported

The RA, against their own records.

PaRRVA-verified

CARE Ratings (the recognised PaRRVA), against NSE-sourced trade and price data.

What a prospect can independently confirm

Self-reported

Nothing, without asking the RA for underlying data.

PaRRVA-verified

The verification itself, since it comes from a named, SEBI-recognised third party.

Exposure under the Advertisement Code

Self-reported

Full exposure. A misleading or cherry-picked self-reported figure is a compliance finding waiting to happen.

PaRRVA-verified

Materially lower. The number carries independent verification, not just the RAโ€™s word.

Effort to produce

Self-reported

Whatever the RAโ€™s own record-keeping supports, which varies widely in quality.

PaRRVA-verified

Enrolment plus whatever process PaRRVA requires; a one-time and ongoing cost, not zero.

How it reads to a prospect who has seen this before

Self-reported

Indistinguishable from every other RAโ€™s claimed track record.

PaRRVA-verified

A concrete point of differentiation, at least while verification is not yet universal.

Verification does not replace methodology

PaRRVA verifies that a performance figure matches the underlying data. It does not decide whether the methodology behind that figure is fair, that is still on the RA. An RA who calculates hit rate on a curated subset of recommendations and gets that curated figure verified has technically passed verification while still misleading a prospect. The Advertisement Code requirements around disclosing the full universe of recommendations, covered in recommendation performance tracking, do not go away because a number is verified. Verification and honest methodology are two separate requirements that both have to hold.

What this means for an RA choosing software

A verified performance claim is only as good as the underlying record it draws from. An RA whose recommendations are timestamped and structured from the moment they are issued has an easier path through whatever process PaRRVA verification eventually requires than one reconstructing history from a WhatsApp group and a personal spreadsheet. This is one more reason the structural comparison in how RA software options compare matters beyond day-to-day workflow.
