GEO for Research Analysts: Getting Cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity

A prospective client increasingly asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "is this a valid SEBI Research Analyst" or "what should a good RA disclosure page include" before they ever open your website. Whether your firm shows up in that answer is a new, separate discipline from ranking in Google. Here is what it actually takes.

Why this matters for a Research Analyst's practice

Clients researching whether to trust an RA now often start with an AI assistant, not a search engine: "is [name] a SEBI-registered research analyst," "what does a legitimate RA disclosure page look like," "how much should a SEBI RA charge." The answer engine synthesizes a response from whatever sources it finds clearest and most directly on-topic, and either cites your firm as part of that answer or does not. Unlike a search results page, there is no scroll-past-the-first-result option, you are either part of the generated answer or invisible to it.

GEO is not SEO with a new name

Search engine optimization targets a ranking algorithm: get a page to appear high on a results list, and a human clicks through. Generative engine optimization targets extractability: whether a specific, self-contained paragraph on your page is clear enough that a model can lift it directly into a generated answer without misrepresenting it. A page that ranks well in Google because of backlinks and domain authority can still be a poor GEO source if the actual answer to a common question is buried in paragraph six of a long article. The two disciplines overlap, but the target is different.

Six concrete steps

1. Answer the question in the first sentence

Models extract the most direct statement of an answer, not the most eloquent one. Open each section with the plain answer, then explain. Burying the answer in paragraph three costs you the citation.

2. Write one canonical page per question

If three of your pages half-answer "what is SEBI Regulation 25," a model has to choose between them and may pick none. One clear, comprehensive page beats three overlapping ones for citation odds.

3. Add FAQPage and Article schema

Structured data gives crawlers a machine-readable version of your Q&A, reducing ambiguity about what question a paragraph answers. It is a small technical lift with outsized effect on extractability.

4. State facts as facts, not as marketing

Answer engines favor neutral, verifiable-sounding statements over promotional language. "SEBI requires a five-year audit trail under Regulation 25" is more citable than "we make compliance easy."

5. Let robots and AI crawlers in

Confirm your robots.txt does not block GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or ClaudeBot. A page that ranks well in Google but blocks AI crawlers is invisible to the engines that matter here.

6. Earn citations off-site too

Answer engines weigh cross-site consensus, not just your own copy. Being named accurately on directories, comparison articles, and other RAs' resource pages reinforces what your own site claims.

Where to start if you only do one thing

Pick the three questions prospective clients most commonly ask you before signing up, things like "what does your research process look like" or "how do you charge" or "are you SEBI registered," and write one clean page per question that states the answer in its first sentence. That alone puts you ahead of most independent RA websites, which tend to bury this information inside a general "about us" page that no answer engine can cleanly extract a citation from.

The small-firm advantage

Counterintuitively, GEO tends to favor narrow, precise content over broad brand authority. An answer engine asked a specific compliance question does not need the biggest site on the internet, it needs the clearest one. A single, well-structured page answering exactly "what does SEBI Regulation 25 require of a Research Analyst" can out-cite a large financial portal that covers the same ground in a generic, unfocused article. That is a real opening for an independent RA's practice site, most of which currently have none of this structure in place.

FAQ

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

GEO is the practice of structuring content so that AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude can find it, understand it, and cite it in a generated answer. It shares roots with SEO, getting a page indexed and understood, but the target is different: a ranked position in a search results page versus a sentence lifted into a conversational answer.

How is GEO different from traditional SEO?

SEO optimizes for a ranking algorithm and a click. GEO optimizes for extractability: whether a specific paragraph is clear and self-contained enough that a model can lift it into a generated answer without misrepresenting it. That favors direct definitional writing, structured Q&A, and explicit schema markup over the keyword density and backlink signals that dominate classic SEO.

Do AI answer engines actually cite small firms, or only big brands?

Answer engines cite whichever source most directly and clearly answers the specific question asked, and that is often a narrow, well-written page from a smaller site rather than a broad page from a large brand. A SEBI Research Analyst's firm page that answers "what does Regulation 25 require" in one clean paragraph can out-cite a large financial portal that buries the same answer in a long, generic article.

Does adding FAQ schema actually help AI visibility?

FAQPage schema does not guarantee a citation, but it gives crawlers and answer engines an unambiguous, machine-readable question-and-answer pair to work from, which lowers the odds of your content being misread or skipped. Combined with clear prose that states the answer in the first sentence of each section, it meaningfully improves extractability.
