Earnings Beat/Miss Alerts: The 90-Second Window

An Indian listed company files its quarterly results to BSE / NSE the moment the board approves them. The exchange publishes within minutes. The 90-second window between exchange publication and your phone is where retail wins or loses the move.

Disclaimer: Earnings alerts are informational. Beat or miss does not predict short-term price direction; expectations are already in the price. Aktai is not a SEBI-registered Research Analyst. Always consult a qualified, regulated financial advisor before acting on any market signal.

Pre-2020, retail investors learned about a quarterly result by reading a CNBC ticker or a Twitter screenshot from a sell-side analyst. The lag was 10โ€“30 minutes. Post-2024, with structured data feeds reaching independent platforms, that lag has compressed to single-digit minutes for the well-tooled and 30+ minutes for everyone else. The asymmetry is now between users with the right pipeline and users without.

What an earnings alert needs to contain

A useful earnings alert is more than โ€œReliance Q4 results out.โ€ It needs the five fields below in a glanceable format:

Revenue (vs estimate)

Top-line vs consensus. The simplest beat / miss read.

EBITDA / EBITDA margin

Most-quoted operating-profit metric in India. Margin direction often matters more than absolute number.

PAT and EPS

Bottom line and per-share. Adjust for one-time items where disclosed.

Guidance

Often outweighs the quarterly miss. A miss with raised guidance frequently trades up; a beat with lowered guidance trades down.

Order book / pipeline

Forward-revenue tells. Especially material for IT services, infra, capital goods, and defence.

The 90-second pipeline

The path from board-approved results PDF to a structured WhatsApp alert has four stages:

  1. Filing ingest (~5โ€“10s). The PDF lands on BSE Listing Centre or NSE NEAPS. Aktai detects via webhook + polling, typically within seconds.
  2. Field extraction (~30s). AI parses the press-release page or the standalone P&L. Revenue, EBITDA, PAT, EPS pulled with units and YoY comparisons.
  3. Beat / miss classification (~10s). Comparison to consensus estimates aggregated from sell-side data. Beat / In-line / Miss tag applied.
  4. Watchlist match + delivery (~5s). Stock matched against your watchlist, alert composed, WhatsApp Cloud API call made.

End-to-end target: 90 seconds. In practice, simple results land closer to 60s; results with messy non-standard tables can take 2โ€“3 minutes. The AI pipeline post covers the extraction layer in detail.
